Dr. Jeff Jolley’s Southern Lake Huron Management Unit Supervisor
October 7, 2024 Agency Update
Note: Important meeting that is seeking public input, see item 4 below
1. 2024 sturgeon releases complete. Two sturgeon were recaptured in the fall Saginaw
Bay gillnetting surveys; both had PIT tags indicating they were from our releases, one
was from the Cass River and one was from the Flint River.
2. The unit is in the process of downloading the acoustic receivers associated with the
GLATOS program that support a variety of fish movement studies including, whitefish
movement, walleye movement, brown trout movement, and juvenile sturgeon
movement. It is a collaborative effort that supports the GLATOS network
https://glatos.glos.us/ and yields important information on our fish populations.
3. Several fish kills, mainly freshwater drum, have been documented along the Lake
Huron coast. These are natural events caused by anoxic waters being moved around by
weather patterns. Please report these occurrences to the MI DNR.
4. A virtual public meeting will be held on October 23rd from 6-7 pm to overview the
proposed Spoils Island fish spawning reef in Saginaw Bay. Registration can be found

on projects, whether you support or oppose, so the DNR can gage the community
support
