ALERT! ALERT! June 6 Meeting cancelled

Unread post by sagbay » May 27th, 2018, 2:08 pm

Have a major hearing alert on commercial fishing bill (netting Saginaw Bay walleye Bycatch). Hearing is scheduled for:

June 6, 2018
1230 hours
Binsfield Senate Office Building
Lansing

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Presidents, Advocates & Board Members,
On April 11th, Michigan Senate Bill 0925 (SB 0925), was referred to the Committee on Outdoor Recreation and Tourism, chaired by Sen. Geoff Hansen, Hart, MI., This bill is extremely important to sport fishing in Michigan going forward. 1) It lists all game fish under Part 487 as not allowed for commercial harvest; 2) Establishes requirements for GPS locations of nets when lowered or lifted, and a website to go to access that information; 3) There are a variety of improvements on reporting and daily record keeping; 4) The conditions of an issued permit can specify when gear can be in the water and when it has to be lifted; 5) Every three years the Department of Natural Resources will conduct a by-catch study, and using that, we will be able to better understand the effect of commercial fishing on the entirety of the fishery.
This bill needs the support of all sport fishermen, charter boat captains, and tourism groups across the state that value our sport fishing heritage and the vibrant harbor towns up and down the coasts. We just got word that the TENTATIVE plan is to hold a hearing on the commercial fishing bill on Wednesday, May 30 at 12:30pm in the Binsfield Senate Office Building, Room 1200. (I cannot be there in person because I will be participating on a panel of interested parties to the FishPass Project on the Boardman River in Traverse City to see to it we allow steelhead to pass up stream to create additional natural reproduction in this vital area of the State.) However, if you can come to Lansing and testify in support of SB 0925 it will be critically important to getting this commercial fishing statue passed into law! This will set the stage for the tribal Consent Decree negotiations in 2020 since the tribes will not be able to point to the state’s other commercial fishers as having the ability to harvest game fish.
We cannot guarantee that the meeting will be held on this day, but this at least is the game plan, if not the 30th, then the hearing will likely happen the following week, June 6, 12:30 in Room 1200 of the Binsfield. (I will be in attendance for this hearing.) Please start getting the word out to folks, about this hearing (put it on your Facebook page) that we would like to have as many come and give testimony or support by your presence at the hearing.
We will let you know as soon as we hear a confirmation of the date. Remember, we need a good turn out and not everyone who comes has to testify but a show of force goes a long way to ensuring a good outcome for us. Thanks all!! An alert will be sent out but watch for a hearing date and make time to come to Lansing and attend the hearing, fill out a card supporting the bill or testify directly.
Committee Hearing on June 6 Confirmed
The hearing is a go! The more people in attendance the better even if they don’t give testimony. You may also provide written testimony to hand to the MUCC Asst. Director once there or get it to me ASAP and I will take it down for you.
It has been months of hard work on this bill so it’s now up to the people to support it. A poor showing will mean we can’t walk the walk and the commercial fishers will get their way. Tell/bring as many sportsmen as possible. A lot of the senators are coming up for re-election this fall. They WILL LISTEN to the strongest support for SB 0925.
just received notice from several sources that the Senate Hearing on Bill 925 scheduled for tomorrow Wednesday June 6, 2018 has been cancelled. The official cancellation notice is attached. No reason was given for the cancellation. Please spread the word so that no one makes a needless trip to Lansing.
