Conservation Insider: 4th Michigan Deer Confirmed with CWD
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Veterinary Disease Lab in Ames, Iowa has confirmed that the fourth Michigan deer suspected of having Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) did, in fact, have the fatal deer disease. The one-and-a-half year-old buck was killed by a bowhunter near DeWitt, Michigan and brought to a Department of Natural Resources check station on November 10. The DNR announced its initial positive CWD findings on November 14. This is the first confirmed case of CWD outside of Meridian Township, where the first three confirmed cases were found within a mile of each other this past spring and summer.

In some counties in Wisconsin, where the disease has been spreading for over a decade, the CWD prevalence rate is over 40% in mature bucks, meaning that almost half of the bucks are not considered safe to eat (The CDC advises against eating venison from deer confirmed to have CWD). This deer wouldn't have been detected if the hunter didn't bring his deer to a DNR check station on December 10, so it is extremely important for anyone hunting in mid-Michigan, especially, to check their deer with the DNR.
