Hunting Boundary Changes at Bay City State Recreation Area

DNR to host public meeting Monday on proposed hunting boundary changes at Bay City State Recreation Area

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will hold a public meeting Monday, Sept. 11, to provide information on an updated proposal to expand hunting opportunities within Bay City State Recreation Area in Bay County. The public meeting will take place 6 to 8 p.m. at the Delta College Lecture Theater, Room G-160, 1961 Delta Road in University Center.

At the meeting, DNR staff will discuss the updated proposal and changes that were incorporated based on comments and feedback received during a public meeting that took place in early August. The changes include:

Modifying the refuge boundaries.
Eliminating the ability of permit-only hunting in the area utilized for education programs.
Removing the ability to hunt on the 2-mile looped trail by establishing a safety buffer of 150 yards from the outer edge of the western side of the trail and only opening up the area west of that area.
Restricting firearm hunting to a limited firearm use, consisting of mainly shotgun.

While the original proposal would have opened up approximately 1,038 acres of new hunting area, the modified proposal still would add an additional 375 acres of land for area hunters.

"The DNR is committed to further public involvement in the expansion of hunting and trapping where it makes sense," said George Lauinger, unit manager of Bay City State Recreation Area. "After the public meeting in early August, we realized we could make some modifications to the proposed boundary areas to better address the concerns heard at the meeting.”

The DNR manages more than 4.6 million acres of public land – including state parks and recreation areas, state game areas and state forests – on behalf of the people of Michigan. Because those lands are used for a variety of outdoor recreation purposes, the department works to find solutions that meet the needs of multiple user groups.

"By taking into consideration the objective of expanding hunting opportunities along with citizens' concern for trail user safety, it gave us an opportunity to explore other options and develop a truly balanced, updated proposal," said Nate Levitte, field operations manager with the DNR Wildlife Division.

The updated proposal on revised hunting boundaries will be on the Sept. 14 Natural Resources Commission meeting agenda for action by commissioners. At the same meeting, a proposal to change the name from Bay City State Recreation Area to Bay City State Park will be on the agenda for action by the DNR director. The meeting will take place at the MSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, located at 4125 Beaumont Road in Lansing. Written comments can also be made via email at
