News Release:

CFAC Chairs and Vice Chairs,

Yesterday, U.S. District Court Judge Paul Maloney ordered the proposed Great Lakes decree into effect. What is now known as the 2023 Great Lakes Decree will govern fishing for all Parties (including Sault Tribe) in the 1836 Treaty waters of the Great Lakes for the next 24 years. The State will be meeting with the Tribes and Federal government early next week to begin discussing steps towards implementation. Tribal regulations need to be updated prior to any changes on the water taking effect. More information on the timing of such changes will be provided soon. The new decree, all of its appendices, and Judge Maloney’s accompanying legal opinion are available on the DNR website: www.michigan.gov/greatlakesconsentdecree.

(a) Except as provided in sub. (f), below, Tribal Commercial
Fishing by any method other than Trap Nets shall be
prohibited.
(b) Trap Net fishing in this zone shall be open only to Bay Mills
and Sault Tribe Trap Net fishers.
(c) A total of four (4) Trap Net operations shall be authorized for
this zone.
(d) Each Trap Net operation is limited to twelve (12) Trap Nets
within the zone.
(e) From October 1 through November 5 and from November 30
through December 31, Walleye and Yellow Perch may be
harvested in Trap Nets in this zone.

The Indians should have to use the same gear as they used in 1836. Ya know saddle up the horse and take your birch bark dug out canoe out to the fishing grounds. How n the hell is modern trucks and boats following their heritage is beside me.
