UPDATE: SB 925 Commercial Fishing Bill

Unread post by sagbay » August 24th, 2018, 11:25 am

SB 925 is the commercial fishing bill has stalled in the Outdoor Recreation committee
(Commercial netters keeping walleye and lake trout in Saginaw Bay and all of Michigan Great Lakes waters).

SB 925, the commercial fishing bill supported by MUCC and the State's sport fishermen, is in the hands of Senator Jeff Hanson (R), the committee chair for the Outdoor Recreation Committee. He has been reluctant to move this bill forward. It's URGENT voters call or email him, urging him to schedule hearings on this bill immediately! His phone number is (517) 373-1635 and his email is senghansen@senate.michigan.gov

Senate Bill 0925 was introduced by Senator Michael Green (R-Mayville) on April 10 and was referred to the Senate Committee on Outdoor Recreation and Tourism. The hearing previously scheduled has been cancelled, so we need to call on the committee to take this bill up this fall!

SB 0925 does five vital things for Michigan’s sport fishery:

Lists all game fish (except black crappie) under Part 487— not allowing them to be caught under commercial harvest.
Establishes requirements for GPS locations of nets when lowered or lifted and creates a website to monitor that.
Includes a variety of improvements on reporting and daily record keeping.
Allows an issued permit to specify when gear can be in the water and when it has to be lifted.
Every three years the Michigan Department of Natural Resources will conduct a by-catch study, and using that, invested parties will be able to better understand the effects of commercial fishing on the entirety of the fishery.

One point that MUCC made in a recent press release is that it will continue to work on creating more of a balance in terms of sportfishing and commercial fishing interests on the Commercial Fishery Advisory Group. As it stands, commercial fishing proponents hold a majority within the group.

It's URGENT voters call or email him, urging him to schedule hearings on this bill immediately! His phone number is (517) 373-1635 and his email is senghansen@senate.michigan.gov

Senate bill 925 (SB 925) is the sportsmen sponsored bill that would revamp commercial fishing regulations in Michigan. Unfortunately this bill is stalled in committee and may die there unless more people contact key senators to move the bill into the hearings stage. Unless Michigan modernizes it's commercial fishing regulations which includes stiffer penalties for violations, it will be that much harder to ask Indians to better enforce consent decree regulations, so this is doubly important that SB 925 pass.
